AfterLife by Simon Funk
cover1.jpg" align="left" height="128" width="94">“After Life” is a very good novel on mind uploading by a new author to watch. It is valiable for free (online and PDF) and from lulu.com on hardcopy printed on request and shipped. The novel is delicious - Alex Harris lives in an impossibly simple fairy tale world and does not know how he got there. He was in the team that developed mind uploading technology, and the first human to undertake an experimental mind uploading procedure. Is he living in a simulation? He has dreams of what happened, or may have happened, to one or another downloaded version of him after the upload. Did consciousness transfer technology trigger a Singularity?
Review by Transhumanism.orgThe book is written in first-person, through the eyes of the main character, Alex Harris, PhD. Alex has just figured out how to transfer one’s consciousness from a biological brain into a man-made computer. He performs the procedure on himself, and as a result, the entire world is changed. Perhaps the most significant change, though, occurs in Alex’s own consciousness. After transferring his consciousness to a machine, Alex experiences a series of unusual events. Some of these events seem like dreams, and some seem all too real. At first, the experiences are very puzzling to the reader (and to Alex himself), and don’t make sense. But as the story unfolds, the pieces fall into place and produce a very mind-blowing cohesive picture.

“… Even if you’re not a huge fan of Science Fiction, you’ll find a lot to enjoy from this book. The characters are a joy to read and that first chapter just has to be read. The book is full of little surprises and some of the reveals are truly entertaining. I don’t want to talk too much about the plot because I think it should be saved for when you read this book. … Baker has plenty of material for the follow on books and could quite happily do a prequel as well. I really hope people will read this book and it provided me with so much enjoyment. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time.”Or you can visit Gary’s site by clicking here.
3 Free Fictional Ebooksby John Erik EgeAll three stories are consistent with Gene Roddenberry’s vision of Star Trek. These ebooks have not received any negative feedback, even from the author’s professor’s friend, who says that they are probably the best star trek books he’s ever read. Of course, I am biased, but I believe them to be, at the least, on par with other Star Trek books.A Touch of GreatnessThe Kelvan (TOS episode, “By Any Other Name”) have returned to their original mission objective, conquer the Milky Way Galaxy and pave the way for their species to invade. It introduce the character Tammas Garcia, who is influenced not only by historical Star Fleet Legends, but by contemporary (TNG)Star Fleet heroes. It is basically a story of growing up Star Fleet, symbolically showing how Star Trek has influenced the lives of the fans. It covers a time span of twenty years and gives a different perspective to “events” and “histories” of people such as Troi, O’Brien, Picard, and McCoy.Click here to download A Touch of Greatness (PDF)Another Piece of the ActionAnother Piece of the Action not only resolves a story arch from book one, but revisits the Iotian people from the TOS episode “A Piece of the Action.” In that episode, Kirk unifies a people who have modeled their culture after 20th Century American Gangsters. McCoy accidentally leaves technology on the planet, and the episode ends with Kirk saying, “A hundred years from now, the Iotians might demand a piece of our action.” And a hundred years from Kirk is Captain Picard, who will find that Kirk’s solution of unifying the Gangsters into a one world government only made them stronger Gangsters, didn’t return them to a more peaceful way of living, and consequently, he has to rescue Garcia who is being held hostage on the Iotian planet. The sub plot deals with an alien race, known as the Preservers, who are conducting experiments on the Iotian population at large, making it appear as if Star Fleet is actually doing the experiments. They are responsible for relocating humans across the Galaxy, such as the Native Americans Kirk found on “Miramee’s” planet. They have been interfering with cultures, in the name of ‘preservation,’ and are instrumental in preserving McCoy from death.Click here to download Another Piece of the Action (PDF)Both Hands FullBoth Hands Full has Tammas Garcia at odds with Star Fleet, the Klingon Empire, and the Gorn. He is recruited for a secret mission by Admiral Eric Pressman, who is engaged in illegal activities, such as conducting research on phase cloak technologies, to recover a stolen weapon system. The weapon is a modified Genesis device, capable of destroying a Borg infested planet, or a Borg ship, that has been stolen. Garcia is forced to maintain the secrecacy of his mission to avoid starting an interstellar war with the Klingons, becuase of Federation Klingon treaty banning research on the Genesis technology, and potential war with Romulan Empire for having access to cloaking technology. Garcia takes command of the first ship to have a Federation Klingon crew, and is pursued by Picard, the Gorn, and the Klingons.
