People in the US Workforce Concerned over High Health Care Costs

A survey of 26,419 Americans conducted by the AFL-CIO revealed Tuesday that people in the U.S. workforce are very concerned with the rising costs of health insurance and other health care costs.

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney said that although most of the respondents were employed, college graduates, union members and had insurance they were not satisfied about the U.S.’s health-care system, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Ninety-five percent of the insured people are dissatisfied with health-care costs, while 62 percent are dissatisfied with health-care quality, the survey found.

Also, 76 percent of people surveyed who lacked insurance themselves and 71 percent with uninsured children said someone in their family had to skip a visit to the doctor due to the costs, even though a family member was truly sick.

Among other findings of the survey were: 96 percent of people with insurance are somewhat or very concerned about being able to afford insurance; 53 percent of Medicare recipients said their prescriptions are not covered or are unaffordable; 46 percent said they spent between $1,000 and $5,000 for health care in the last year and 17 percent spent more than $5,000; about 48 percent said they or a family member stayed in a job just for the health insurance.

“The survey results paint a devastating picture of a health care system that costs too much, covers too little, leaves too many people behind and is getting worse,” Sweeney said in a conference call, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The survey was conducted between January 14 and March 3.
